The Fine Art of Saying No to a Training Request

Before saying yes to training, you need to uncover the root cause of performance gaps to determine whether training is the best response. Join this session to learn when to say “yes” to a training request and how to say “no” without ruining your career.
  • Apply one of three models for evaluating performance gaps to determine whether training is an appropriate solution to a performance problem.

  • Select from ten strategies for respectfully declining when training isn't the best solution, and practice using it.

Sophie Oberstein has been a learning and organizational development professional for over 20 years at public and private organizations, including Weight Watchers (now WW), Columbia University Medical Center, Redwood City, and Citibank.

Oberstein is an adjunct professor in NYU’s Learning Design certificate program and an on-camera subject matter expert for ATDYou. Her latest book, Troubleshooting for Trainers, describes 45 instructional design challenges and how to overcome them.
