In this provocative presentation based on cutting-edge research, Susan Fowler challenges you to reconsider seemingly tried and true leadership competencies. Susan builds a compelling case for rethinking what good leadership looks like in light of what we now know about the true nature of human motivation.

You may be surprised to discover how your current development strategy includes leadership skills that undermine people’s psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Competencies such as giving recognition, driving for results, and holding people accountable tend to thwart people’s productivity, sustainable performance, creativity, resilience, risk-taking, mental health, emotional well-being, and physical energy.

Susan asks you to consider:

  • How leaders unwittingly impede people’s sense of autonomy
  • How competencies designed to deepen connection and meaning, actually diminish a sense of relatedness
  • How sanctioned practices hinder people’s learning, growth, and competence

Plan to leave with a fresh take on competencies once considered essential for leaders to develop their people—and recommendations for innovative best practices that take advantage of the newest science of motivation.
