EMPLOYEE LEARNING WEEK

Employee Learning Week 2025 will be held December 1-5.

Employee Learning Week is an awareness campaign highlighting the important connection between learning and achieving organizational results. We want as many Houston companies as possible to participate because training is more important now than ever before.

The Houston ATD Chapter is celebrating ELW with a week of great events.  We will be recognizing companies for amazing stories. If you plan on celebrating Employee Learning Week we’d love to have you join us. See all of our ELW events on the ATD Houston Event Calendar.

    Employee learning Week:
Learn to Make Sushi with Carl Rosa!

Join us for Sushi 101, an interactive and flavorful cooking class hosted as part of ATD Houston’s Employee Learning Week!

In this experience, you’ll learn the art of making quality sushi. Guided step-by-step, you’ll roll your own sushi and enjoy it fresh during the class.

Attendees will also receive access to online notes for recreating sushi at home, plus a few delightful surprises to make the event extra fun. Whether you’re a sushi lover or a curious beginner, this class promises education, creativity, and a memorable culinary adventure!

Please notethis class is limited to 25 people and is first come, first accommodated. Registration closes at 25 people registered. List any allergies or dietary preferences you have so we can let the chef know.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify the essential ingredients and tools required to make sushi at home.
    • Demonstrate basic sushi-making techniques, including rolling, shaping, and presentation.
    • Differentiate between common types of sushi (e.g., maki, nigiri, hand rolls) and their preparation methods.
    • Recreate sushi dishes independently using provided online notes and resources.
    • Appreciate cultural elements of Japanese cuisine through surprises and insights shared during the session.
Speaker: Carl Rosa, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, faced a life-altering challenge in 2005 when he and his wife, Sonya, lost everything to Hurricane Katrina, forcing them to start over. After moving to Houston, Carl founded "The Sushi Club of Houston," which quickly grew to 17,000 members in just seven years. In 2012, he shifted the organization’s focus 'sushi dinners' to 'sushi instruction' - teaching people how to create exceptional sushi at home. His classes expanded to Austin, San Antonio, Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, Steamboat Springs and Denver. In 2007, Carl began leading tours to Japan, and now, has visited the country over 90 times; still offering tours throughout the year. Known for his fun, straightforward approach to sushi, the success of his classes allowed him to semi-retire in 2021, choosing to teach only three or four sushi classes per week and limiting his visits to Japan to five times a year. Having celebrated nearly 30 years of marriage with Sonya, Carl now dedicates his free time to studying the Japanese philosophies of Kaizen and Ikigai, enjoying classical music (especially Beethoven), and creating Japanese cultural videos on YouTube.
